Some of the delights of steam power running in 2024 in the South of the UK. Cast in order of appearance: - - Brighton 'Terrier' A1X class 0-6-0 tank engine built in 1872 No. 72 'Fenchurch' climbing Freshfield Bank at pace. Just watching steam trains go by in some glorious countryside. Shot mostly at the Bluebell Railway with a few clips of mainline steam. First there are a series of 'tasters' followed by a more leisurely look. But turn it up LOUD! Tasters: Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No. 73156 . Standard Class 4 2-6-0 No. 76017. Allelys were contracted to move two 300 ton loads from Shoreham to Ninfield in Sussex, England. Careful precise manoeuvring was required to get round tight corners and under a low railway bridge. Sheer brute power was necessary to get up the hills. Here are some highlights followed by a leisurely look at some of the manoeuvrers necessary to get the job done.

Another old video of poor quality but the sound of a Bulleid at full stretch is acceptable. 35028 'Clan Line' tender first with 11 coaches from Yeovil Pen Mill to Weymouth. With the gradient increasing from 1 in 73 to nearly 2 miles of 1 in 51 on damp slippery rails it was always going to be a test of man and machine. In the event, even though the rails had been hand sanded up to Hollywell Tunn...

excellent video and thumbs up to the whole moving and rigging crew
Cheers! and agree with your thumbs up!
THE NIGHTMARE OF REGIMENTED SR SET FORMATIONS !!! "The filming of model railways is trickier than it looks " ! Agreed, and you're doing pretty well. Even trickier I would add is getting the Southerns Regimented coaching SETS correct. The Exmouth - Cleethorpes train being a case in point. All my pics of that train show it to have been ER stock for the simple reason only one set was necessary for this SO service. So no balancing stock requirement for the SR to provide ! Further the use of the (Hornby) SR Maunsell Second Open (Diagram 2005) would have been unusual in any REGULAR SERVICE inter-regional train ! Diagram 2005 coaches. Nos 1312-1361, 50 vehicles built Eastleigh 3/33 to 8/33. (operation 1954-64). 4 were allocated to "West of Axminster" Type 2W 2-car local Sets. SETS Nos 104, 105, 109 & 110. 20 were rebuilt in 1958/9 into Pull/Push Sets 600-619. (Altered to Diagram 2023) Also available from Hornby. 4 more were allocated in West of England mainline Sets: SET 269 11 Car (1346), SET 370 2 Car (1355), SET 430 10-Car (1344/1345). 10 more were summer only Designated as (R)SO Restaurant 2nd Open, for SW Division mainline services, because they had tables. These ran paired with catering vehicles of various types (including the Hornby KDF Kitchen Dining First), and these pairs were inserted or removed from mainline sets on a daily basis as required. From 1957 withdrawal of these vehicles & many of the SR designed catering vehicles began. All were withdrawn by 1962. NOTE: Stock details extracted from BR(SR) Carriage Working Notice Appendices (CWNA) A twice yearly BR internal document Happy modelling !😝
Absolutely! :-)
Do the tractor units have extra special low gear ratios ?
I believe so and the power is transmitted through torque converters.
Great video. Loved spotting these as a boy on the Southern. Bulleids were (and still are) my favourite locos. Thanks for the memories.
You are welcome Brian. Mine too, and I saw many of them as I was passing Brighton Sheds every school day for a few years and spotting elsewhere. Nick.
God imagine getting your load rejected 😂😂 Awesome video thanks for sharing 👍
Alleleys never fail to impress with the awesome kit they've got and their drivers are some of the best heavy haulage drivers out there. Respect for the driver's and the rest of their team they move some of the biggest loads to hit Britain's roads 🎉🎉🎉
3:08 what a beautiful unique Diesel engine. Bet it smelt lovely
:-) Sort of burnt lubricating oil I think...
@@chatty1chatty1NickD yes the good old 2 stroke
Wow!that's a fantastic rendering of Templecombe....puts my efforts to model the SandD to shame....thanks for the encouragement 😊😊
Thank you!. All it needed was time! Lock down gave me that - not that I wish another one to finish it... Nick.
Top Drawer. I have not seen a Templecombe model before this. The only difference as far as I can see is that No 2 signal box has an embankment on its north side as opposed to a slope dpwn to the sidings which come from the goods yard. But you can't have everything on a model layout. The Exmouth _ Cleethorpse, an anomaly on the S&D, is a good example to feature.
Thank you. And :-), you are so right - the embankment hides the LSWR mainline en route to hidden sidings beneath. Compromises all round - I really needed 40' by 20' to have a more realistic interpretation. 16' by 12' makes a tight squeeze.
First class
Very kind of you to say so. Thank you. Nick.
You have a very nice layout. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you , you are very welcome. Lockdown provided a time to get it up and running.
Nothing better than Alleys .
Their napier deltic power plants often sound like WW2 ariel assault planes. One thing that I may find Deltics intimidating but yet, amazing.
nuce
14:58 Ooo a doubleheader! Twinzies!
wow so nice heavy duty job
Just gonna leave this timestamp here 2:32 for the mighty Deltic Roar
مجرد خزان كهرباء اقدر احمله على لوبد من غير هذي الزحمه
Only one of the two engines was running during take-off from the station
Yes, you are quite correct. In fact in all shots of each loco there is only one engine running. I am told that the second engine, if in working condition, will only kick in when the line speed reaches 23m.p.h.
Man & Machine.
1:06 Great shot of one in green and one in blue. Don't know which is better.
Nice of you to say so, thank you. Nick.
@@chatty1chatty1NickD My names not Nick.
🙂 - Mine is though.
Are you sure you measured the clearance under the bridge, Fred?
:-)
Top tip. Recreate a Deltic on full power by vaping, then breathing out through your nostrils.
I will never understand why 20th century Britain was so obsessed with opposed piston diesel.
साथियों इतना रिस्क लेकर ड्राइवर भाई चलते हैं फिर भी ड्राइवर भाई धक्का मुक्का खाते रहते हैं कोई मान सम्मान नहीं मिलता
Camelot is one of my personal favourite locomotives along with Mallard, Tornado and the Flying Scotsman
Amazing what they can shift around
Is this at a time when Britain made something great many many moons ago. disgusting britain.wow what a sound
What a great video. Thank you for all. the work that you put into making it. The audio was really good through my headphones, too.
Thank you for your kind words. I do like to make sure the sound is right. Nick.
What’s with the horns sounding like a gay guy getting pegged?
I REALLY the hiss and puffing of steam engines but the roars of the diesel engine sound RAW!..
"Floreat Vapour" May Steam Flourish! Birch Grove is my favorite. It’d be even lovelier to see her steam in Marsh Umber!
I hope they didn't send the order back
😬 *Promosm*
I love the temperament of a steam engine.. 👍👍🇪🇸🇪🇸🚂🚂
Amei👏👏👏
It's like a battleship on rails!
Nothing quite like the sound of either a Deltic or a Detroit Diesel two-stroke under heavy load with that distinctive high-rev scream.
Well, I don't know about that The original 125 Valenta engines give it a run for its money; as does the much newer class 68 - with that low volume this. Like the Deltic, you often hear the 68 quite a long time before you hear it! Throbbing away in the distance.
Reminds me of the Hornby Dublo version I had as a kid.
That engine sounds like a dragster tbh.
Only wish Fred Dibnah was still around to see that
11:03 Did they leave the water hatch open, or is it fitted with an automatic stoker?
Ah - neither of those. The steam at the back of the tender comes from the steam driven air pump hidden inside the back of the tender. Many steam locomotives have had air pumps fitted in various locations, 34067 'Tangmere' for example has one on the left hand side of the front buffer beam, (it was moved from a position under the buffer beam after a few seizures were experienced in traffic. The air pumps allow the locomotive to run with air braked coaching stock.
Clever Poppy xx
0:25 That horn tho
That is too cool !! Some real power there, love it 😎 ...
Wow nice
You are welcome.
great engine, but not the most tuneful really - sounds a bit like a Detroit diesel
Wow!
